Textile waste is one of the largest contributors to waste in the world. Globally, an estimated 92 million tonnes of textile waste is generated, or the equivalent of a garbage truck full of clothes and cloth ending up in the trash every second. In Indonesia alone, based on data from the National Waste Management Information System, Ministry of Environment and Forestry (SIPSN KLHK) as of 2021, there are 2.3 million tons of textile waste, equivalent to 12 percent of household waste generated annually. This has also become a concern for the founder of the PART brand, a new local brand that comes with the concept of sustainable fashion by utilizing batik cloth waste.
As part of Miss Rara, PART will later use the patchwork of Miss Rara to produce a collection of contemporary clothes that are suitable for young people's styles.
“As a producer of batik clothes, every day dozens of sacks of fabric waste are produced. Of course, this is one of the concerns for me and the team every day. Because in every millimeter of the fabric there is the sweat and effort of craftsmen who go to great lengths to preserve batik,” said Pipiet Noorastuti, Founder of Nona Rara and also PART.
Pipiet added, “We are trying to innovate to deliver environmentally friendly products. The use of patchwork in the PART brand is one of our steps in minimizing waste and contributing to the sustainable fashion movement.”
This collection from the PART brand is designed to match the current style of young people today. This is aimed at embracing more young people to start using batik in their activities.
“We want to invite young people to be proud of local traditions, proud of batik. For this reason, the PART brand collection is presented with a modern, elegant and versatile design, made with love for the wearer," said Pipiet.
Since its arrival at the end of 2021, PART has issued more than 6 collections. One of them is PART of Dazzling, which uses rags from the Miss Rara x Disney collection.
In addition, last June, PART also collaborated with Intan Anggita Pratiwi, a fashion sustainability activist and founder of Setali Indonesia, to make clothes and held a workshop at the “Old Goods Spring Back” exhibition at ASHTA District 8.
The concept of suitainable fashion from this Part has also received public attention. Public interest is quite high, so Part has the opportunity to open its first outlet in Sarinah, on September 30, 2022.
The presence of PART is expected to increase the awareness of young people to use batik in their daily activities. Later at Sarinah outlets, special collections will be presented which can only be obtained at these outlets.
