Cotton Brazil, an international market development program for certified Brazilian cotton from the Brazilian Cotton Growers Association (ABRAPA) is holding a Sellers Mission event in Jakarta, Tuesday (29/11/2022). This event focuses on promoting reliable, sustainable, traceable and high-quality Brazilian cotton. Brazilian Cotton is committed to ensuring Cotton Brazil's ongoing commitment to supplying raw materials to Indonesia. This commitment was made when the global cotton industry faced a supply shortage. The Asian market was also affected, starting from the level of producers to sellers.

Asian countries like Indonesia need imported cotton to make up for the shortfall in domestic supply. The surge in demand for imported high-quality cotton has paved the way for a resurgent Brazil cementing its position as the world's fourth largest producer and second largest exporter of cotton.

ABRAPA President Julio Cezar Busato, said his country is making use of the latest agricultural technologies to reduce the harmful environmental impacts caused by previous unsustainable cotton farming practices.

To realize this commitment, said Julio Cezar, his party focuses on four main pillars, namely creating a sustainable cotton industry without sacrificing quality and demand. “For this reason, Brazilian cotton is a major import for our partners in Indonesia. We look forward to continuing to foster our relationship with our partners in Indonesia, learning from each other to create a brighter future for the cotton industry," said Julio Cezar Busato

In the last four years, Brazil's cotton production has more than doubled, from 1.3 million tonnes in 2015/2016 to around 3 million tonnes in 2019/2020. This is mainly achieved by the use of advanced agricultural technologies and the adoption of non-irrigated agricultural practices in over 90% of Brazil's cotton farms. During the 2021/2022 harvest season, Brazilian cotton farms have supplied 155 thousand tonnes to Indonesia.

Indonesia is the sixth largest importer of Brazilian cotton in the world. This is not surprising given the rapid growth of the textile industry which accounts for nearly 7% of national exports; estimated at US$ 11.9 billion.

In the world's textile industry, Brazilian cotton has a 28% market share, making it one of Indonesia's largest cotton imports. The percentage is expected to increase, with cooperation strengthened by the abundance of high-quality Brazilian cotton.

Brazilian cotton supply is expected to grow again this year. ABRAPA estimates that this year's harvest area will reach more than 1.6 million hectares, an increase of 15% compared to last year. This is due to an increase in the planting area.

ABRAPA projects growth of up to 20% in 2022 with production reaching nearly 2.5 million tonnes. This figure marks the second best harvest season in the history of Brazilian cotton.

Globally, Brazil exported 1.519 million tonnes of cotton between August 2021 and April 2022, generating US$2.87 billion in revenue. Brazil estimates that total exports will reach 1.8 million tonnes in the next cycle, with an estimated 2.2 million tonnes for the period 2023 to 2024.
