The government targets the national textile and textile product (TPT) industry to meet most of the domestic demand, achieving an increase in exports of 15 percent per year by 2025. Then become the Top 5 textile manufactures in the world by 2030 with a specialization in functional clothing. Until now, TPT is said to continue to make a major contribution to the Indonesian economy, along with the recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic. As a social safety net and foreign exchange earner, the textile industry is able to absorb a workforce of 3.65 million people or 18.79 percent of the total workers in the manufacturing industry.
"Meanwhile, as a foreign exchange earner, the export value of the textile industry will reach USD 13.02 billion in 2021," said Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita in his virtual speech at the 3rd Indonesia Textile Conference in Bandung, Thursday (28/7/2022).
The Minister of Industry also stated that the textile industry has a strategic role in the industrialization process.
"This is because the input and output of the textile industry have strong links with other industries and other economic sectors, ranging from raw materials in the form of fiber to consumer goods in the form of apparel and finished goods," he explained.
With such a large role and contribution, the government spurred the utility of the textile industry to return to its pre-pandemic utilization level, which was between 60-80 percent so that it could support national exports.
"Gradually, this sector has begun to recover. Currently its utilization is at 70 percent," explained Agus.
Compared to last year, the value of textile exports increased significantly by 28 percent. This increase was driven by apparel and yarn.
"Industrial investment also increased by 6.4 percent until the first quarter of 2022 compared to the same period the previous year," he added.
As one of the priority sectors, the textile industry is an inseparable part of the Making mIndonesia 4.0 program.
The Making Indonesia 4.0 agenda for the textile industry in Indonesia is directed at making the national textile industry a leader in the production of "functional" clothing.
