The problem of textile waste in Pekalongan City is quite complicated and has not been completely resolved. If left unchecked the impact on the environment will be even greater. Textile waste usually comes from the batik, screen printing and jeans industries which are widely scattered in the city of batik. Overcoming this problem, the Pekalongan City Government (Pemkot) of Pekalongan, together with the Yogyakarta Indonesian Nuclear Polytechnic, conducted a trial run on the use of nuclear technology to overcome the problem of residual waste generated from the textile industry.

Mayor of Pekalongan City Afzan Arslan Djunaid said in Pekalongan on Wednesday (11/1) that the research program started with the initiation of the City Government to collaborate with the Yogyakarta Indonesian Nuclear Technology Polytechnic.

"Then, the Yogyakarta Indonesia Nuclear Technology Polytechnic involved the National Research and Innovation Agency and the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute in an effort to address the problem of industrial waste," he said.

According to Afzan, through the use of nuclear technology it is hoped that the problem of waste management in which so far has not been resolved can be resolved properly because Pekalongan City already has the title "The World's City of Batik".

"We hope that through this collaboration, the batik business will continue to run but the waste can be managed properly and not pollute the environment," he said.

He said, the sampling process using nuclear technology based on the results of wastewater tests taken in Pekalongan City was still environmentally friendly, even micro-organisms could still live.

"After going through several trial stages, he said, the water was also germ-free and fit for drinking," he said.

It is said, the success of this research program will run well if it is supported by the role of all parties, both local government, academics, entrepreneurs, and the community.

"We have also conveyed complex problems that this also needs support from the neighboring regional government because the river in Pekalongan City originates from Pekalongan Regency and its downstream is in Pekalongan City," he explained.

Meanwhile, Director of the Indonesian Nuclear Technology Polytechnic Zainal Arief said, currently it is still in the research stage where his party has been together with the Pekalongan City Government since 2021 by taking waste samples from a number of batik industry entrepreneurs.

The sample was then subjected to "treatment" with gamma technology, which is a form of radiation and tested in the laboratory.

"There is one micro-organism that is included in wastewater that has been 'treated' and can still live. This indicates that there is progress in improving the waste," he said
