Head of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) Margo Yuwono said the number of workers in the textile industry decreased in the period August 2021-August 2022. Based on BPS monitoring of 13 sub-sectors of the textile industry, in August 2021 there were still 1.13 million people working. But by August 2022, that number had decreased to just 1.08 million people. "Based on the sakernas from August 2021 to August 2022, in the sub-sector, namely the textile industry, there is a decline in the workforce," he said at a press conference, Monday (7/11).

This condition is in line with the news that there are rampant layoffs (PHK) in the work industry, one of which is textiles in Indonesia.

Previously, the Head of Employment Division of the Indonesian Employers' Association (Apindo) Anton J Supit also said that garment (textile) and shoe (footwear) companies were forced to take layoffs due to reduced orders or orders.

In fact, there are buyers who cancel orders, even though production has been done. "Production has been ordered to hold. So, layoffs have started happening from now on and are estimated to last until 2023," he said, Wednesday (26/10).

This is different from the country's economic conditions which grew strongly to 5.72 percent in the third quarter of 2022. One of which is supported by the export of the processing industry.

In this case, Margo explained that the textile industry is not the only part of the processing industry. In the third quarter of 2022, exports of high processing industries are supported by capital-intensive, not labor-intensive industries.

In addition, he stressed that the survey conducted by BPS was recorded as of August 2022. In other words, if the layoff data is more than the decline in the number of workers in the textile industry, it could happen because the data came in September.

"When it comes to the economy, one quarter, three months are recorded, while employment is recorded on the spot in August. BPS also records based on a sampling approach with statistical methods, so a sample that represents the entire population is selected," he concluded.
