Entering the months of Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr is usually the most 'fun' moment for many textile companies. However, this year it did not go as usual. The decline in demand has made the textile sector and its derivatives stretch, such as raw materials for fiber and filament yarn.

"When comparing with last year, there is interest but not as big as two years ago when it was before the Covid-19 pandemic," said Secretary General of the Indonesian Fiber and Filament Yarn Producers Association (APSyFI) Redma Gita Wirawasta.

When the growing demand has started to emerge, however, the attacks on imported textile products seem unstoppable. Clothes and pants, mostly from China, have cheaper prices, and continue to erode the market owned by Indonesian textile products.

The condition was different when it was early last year, at that time the demand was not as high as in normal times, but not many imported textile products entered the Indonesian market.

"From Q1 to Q2 it could drop to 30% of our sales, which is huge. Even at the beginning of the year our utilization was almost full, so mid-March it dropped. Purchasing power from January to February was not strong, but imports were not high. In Q1 imports were hampered by containers entering Indonesia. "There are more containers available in March. This is a problem," said Redma.

The problems that occur in the textile sector continue to recur from year to year. The swiftness of imported products entering Indonesia seems that there is no right way to solve it.

Redma said he would meet President Joko Widodo to solve the problem with textile entrepreneurs. As for some time ago Jokowi has also shown his frustration with imported products because many have 'killed' the domestic industry.

"The Minister of Industry wants to give him time, if necessary it will go to the President. So we want to meet Pak Jokowi again because the conditions in June-July are crucial because working capital for THR, working capital payments continue to decline, while revenue is choked up from downstream. So this is crucial, there is a decision. which is significant, especially in the market, we need market certainty, "said Redma.
