President Joko Widodo alias Jokowi's decision to ban the import or thrifting business of used clothing will threaten the businesses of the sellers, including Jodi Irawan. The thrifting business owner from Cirebon said the government should have thought more carefully about the ban decision so it would not harm either party."As a used clothing business person, I am a bit disappointed," said Jodi on Saturday, March 25, 2023. The 29-year-old man questioned, if the thrifting business is considered detrimental to the textile industry, counterfeit products or (KW products) are still being sold freely. Because it is also detrimental to the textile industry.
“Is there any firmness from the government for that? In addition, most local products are now priced quite expensive. So in my opinion what is detrimental to the textile industry is not only thrifting," said Jodi.
Jodi started his thrifting business back in 2020, but was put on hold due to focusing on other businesses. The plan is that in the near future he will continue to reopen his thrifiting business. He predicts that obtaining merchandise will be very difficult and rare if you look at the current conditions.
"Because right now the government is directly destroying hundreds of bales of imported clothes but there is no solution for thrifting business people. So I'm waiting whether there is another solution from the government or not," said Jodi.
Previously, the Ministry of Trade or the Ministry of Trade banned thrifting businesses in accordance with President Joko Widodo alias Jokowi's orders. The prohibition refers to the Minister of Trade Regulation Number 40 of 2022 concerning Amendments to the Minister of Trade Regulation Number 18 of 2021 concerning Export Prohibited Goods and Import Prohibited Goods.
The government reasoned, firstly, imported used clothes cause disease, fungus, and others. Second, Indonesia is not a trash bin for other countries' used clothes. The third reason is the sluggishness of Indonesian textile SMEs.
The Ministry of Trade even destroyed 730 bales of used clothes, shoes and bags that were allegedly imported, valued at approximately Rp. 10 billion. The destruction was carried out symbolically by the Minister of Trade Zulkifli Hasan alias Zulhas at the Type A Terminal of Bandar Raya Payung Sekaki in Pekanbaru, Riau, Friday 17 March 2023.
The destruction was carried out to protect consumers from threats to health and the domestic industry. "This is a follow-up to the supervision of the trade and import of used clothing which we carry out on an ongoing basis," said Zulhas.
This extermination, said the Minister of Trade Zulhas, is a form of the Ministry of Trade's commitment in the process of monitoring and law enforcement related to violations in the field of trade and consumer protection.
