Currently Majalaya is the center of the textile industry in the Bandung area. Not only many large industries, but there are hundreds of small industrial-scale factories scattered in this eastern area of Bandung Regency. The fame of the textile industry in Majalaya is inseparable from the habit of ancient people in weaving. The people of Majalaya are no exception. Hafidz Azhar, one of the researchers in the Malajaya textile industry, said that people in Majalaya are used to using tools to weave. "At the beginning of the 20th century, the people of Majalaya already carried out traditional weaving activities. Indeed, there were no factories like today," said Hafidz, Monday, August 21, 2023.
In historical records written by Official Setia, said Hafidz, in the 1910s, Majalaya residents were used to using kentreung or gedogan which were weaving tools.
"They weave with raw materials obtained from the garden or around the house. Such as cotton and natural dyes," he said.
The resulting product is cloth or sarong for personal use. Not for sale like now.
Weaving tools are not machines themselves, only appeared in 1920 at which time the Dutch East Indies government issued a policy to develop the textile industry.
Until finally, the weaving habits practiced by the Majalaya people were glimpsed and continued to be developed. Until now, the area is famous for its textile industry.
