Students of the Fashion and Textile Design Program (DFT) UK Petra, Surabaya process fabric waste into beautiful design applications in clothing. This creation is an effort of DFT UK Petra in campaigning for Zero Waste in the fashion world. A total of 24 student works will be exhibited at the 2021 Innofashion Fair from 16-18 December 2021 on a hybrid basis at the UK Petra campus. The offline exhibition will take place on December 16, 2021 starting at 13.00 WIB at the Q3 Gallery of the UK Petra campus, Surabaya. Meanwhile, the online exhibition can be accessed on DFT's Instagram media, namely @dft.ukpetra, the DFT website, namely fashion.petra.ac.id, and the petra.id/youtube_Innofasion YouTube channel.

According to the Chair of the 2021 Innofashion Fair, Poppy Firtatwentytyna Nilasari, those involved in making this creation are students of the 2019 2020 and 2021 batches. In this creation, students are invited to take responsibility for their work.

“Indonesia is now in an emergency for textile waste, a lot of fabrics are piling up. That's why we invite students to also learn what sustainable fashion is, one of which is zero waste," he explained, Thursday (16/12).

The hope, continued Poppy, the students will minimize the use of cloth when producing works. In terms of design, these fashion creations are adapted to the fashion and textile design curriculum.

In the third semester, students are taught to make patterns and are allowed to use the services of a tailor. However, the students did the making of patterns and techniques for cutting cloth. Then, entering the fifth semester, the students not only used patterns and cutting techniques but were also asked to sew the clothes they made.

"They are also taught to make creative fabrics from the rest of the fabric used," he explained.

The 2021 Innofashion Fair will not only display an onsite exhibition of student clothing design works but will also be enlivened offline including design drawings, 3D animation videos, talk shows and webinars. A total of seven subjects also participated in this exhibition including Visual Communication Media, Creative Fabric, Fashion Design, Design Thinking, Basic Textiles, Design Principles and Elements, and Digital Fashion.

According to one of the students involved in the 2021 Innofashion Fair, Brigitta Halim, in this activity his party designed the outer kimono using a zero waste technique. "So I use unused fabric or leftover stitches to make new patterns," he explained.

Meanwhile, Brigitta admits that the difficulty is because it is handmade, so the application of creative fabric techniques must be sewn one by one. Another pattern is also seen in the outfit modeled by the model, Waste Kimono Outer. This outfit is in the form of an outer garment in the form of a kimono with a zero waste technique. To get clothes with zero waste, use the rectangular pattern technique according to the dimensions of the fabric.

This student work from the Creative Fabric Course even uses a combination of several fabrics. Although the result of several pieces of cloth, this kimono is very well done. Because this kimono is decorated with yo-yo, tuck, and ruffle applications, as well as an additional decoration free from other creative fabric techniques such as unfinished, slow stitching and embroidery.
